Bacterial meningitis

Definite diagnosis of meningitis confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid showing growth of pathogenic bacteria in culture, resulting in neurological deficit documented for at least 90 days from the date of diagnosis.

The diagnosis of bacterial meningitis must be made by a specialist.

Exclusion

No benefit will be payable under the definition of "bacterial meningitis" for viral meningitis.

Bacterial meningitis is an infection of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and the membranes covering the brain and spinal column (meninges). To confirm the diagnosis, a sample of the spinal fluid is taken using a spinal tap for analysis. Pathogenic bacteria cause infection of the cerebrospinal fluid.
