Transient ischemic attacks (TIA)

A loss of blood flow to a part of the brain causing a temporary episode of neurological dysfunction. Sometimes referred to as a "mini-stroke".

Things to consider

  • Age at diagnosis and current age
  • Number of attacks
  • Sequelae
  • Tobacco use
  • Cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Other risk factors (for example, diabetes, coronary heart disease, depression, epilepsy)

1 episode or more
Within 6 months of the last episode: declined
More than 6 months since the last episode:
  • Age under 40 at the time of application
rated +175 to +350 or declined
  • Age 40 or more at the time of application
rated of +50 to +350 or declined
Caused by taking an oral contraceptive:
rated +50, standard possible after 5 years, if recovery complete and no risk factors
